In this album, I visit the interwar period with musical works: La Valse (1920) by Maurice Ravel, An American in Paris (1928) by George Gershwin, and Africa (1930) by William Grant Still. Partnering with this album is “the Americanist” essay, where I delve into the historical narratives that have shaped society, technology and culture, and lastly, an American identity. All three compositions tell a wonderful story. Through a scenic, rosy-colored lens, are tales that are heartfelt, adventurous, and significant to their creators’ identity and spirit. Whether traveling by plane, folklore, or dream sequence, the touristy vibe of this music continues to rouse my imagination. Its potent energy gives me optimism and stirs an unmistakable can-do attitude.
